Washington State Requirements


Required Continuing Education Hours

Life and Health Producers

24 CE hours, including 3 hours of ethics, are required every 2-year license term (see license term below).

Annuity Training

  • Before selling, soliciting, or negotiating annuity products, producers must complete a one-time annuity training course approved for at least 4 hours. *Residents who satisfy the training requirements of another state that are similar to the Washington law will be deemed compliant for the Washington requirement.

Long-Term Care (LTC)

  • Initial 8-hour LTC training requirement: Before selling, soliciting, or negotiating LTC insurance products, producers must complete an initial 8-hour, state-approved LTC training course. Producers may take any 8-hr NAIC approved LTC course for use in any licensed state.

  • Ongoing 4-hour LTC training requirement: From the date of completing the 8-hour initial training requirement, producers must complete 4 hours of state-approved LTC training every 24 months thereafter. Producers may take any 4-hr NAIC approved LTC course for use in any licensed state.

Property and Casualty Producers

24 CE hours, including 3 hours of ethics, are required every 2-year license term (see license term below).

Flood Insurance

All Washington producers who sell flood insurance must complete a one-time, 3-hour course approved for the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

The license term is every 2 years, based on the producer’s date of birth.

Nonresident CE Requirements

  • Nonresident producers selling, soliciting, or negotiating LTC products are required to complete the same special training/education requirements as resident producers selling these products.

All Washington producers who sell flood insurance must complete a one-time 3-hour course approved for the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Nonresident producers may take any 3-hr approved NFIP course for use in any licensed state.

CE Subject Requirements

Category restrictions:

Producers must complete 3 hours in approved ethics courses. All other hours may be completed by taking courses approved in any line of authority.

Course presentation:

Producers may complete the Washington CE requirements through self-study. The self-study course and exam can be either paper or online.

Study requirements:

Students should read the course material prior to taking the final exam.

Final Exam Requirements

Exam proctor requirements:

Self-study final exams DO NOT require a monitor.

Exam rules:

Self-study final exams are open book. Producers may refer to the course material as often as needed. The final exam must be passed with a score of 70 percent or higher to receive credit. If the final exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of retakes.

CE Carryover Allowance

No excess CE credit hours may be carried over to the next 2-year license term.

Course Repetition Rules

A course number may not be taken for credit more than once within 3 calendar years from the original completion date. Please note: Course numbers for LTC and annuity courses are the same for all providers. The initial 8-hour LTC course and annuity training course will be considered duplicates if repeated within the 3 year period. The 4-hour LTC course is exempt from the repetition rule.

Certificate of Completion

AOIS provides online, printable certificates of completion in Washington. Certificates of completion will be available to print online immediately after the final exam is passed. Producers must keep a copy of each certificate of completion in their files for 3 years.

CE Completion Reporting

Next-day Reporting - AOIS reports course completions directly to the Washington Office of the Insurance Commissioner every business day. Producers may also self-report their courses to the WAOIC if their license needs to be renewed prior to AOIS's next report. Once AOIS has reported the credits to WAOIC there is no longer a need for the student to self-report.

CE Exemptions

Resident adjusters and producers holding only limited credit insurance, travel insurance, or surety licenses are exempt from CE requirements.
